Setting benchmarks for current systems and targets for improvement projects is at the heart of the AUDIT phase. Many IT departments work to improve efficiency but fail to audit and assess the pre-action phase, leaving them without qualitative data for promotion within the business. Making savings is important, but being able to measure and communicate them internally within the business, and to external audiences, could be more so. If IT departments are delivering major environmental improvements and can quantify these to assessing bodies (BSI for ISO 14001) or other stakeholders, such as investors, then the importance of this work amplifies in significance.
