Helping a leading brick and click retailer gain value through data!
Nowadays, the majority of businesses within the retail sector are faced with a big challenge: how and where to store their data in order to achieve maximum efficiency, security and get the most value to drive sales.
On that premise, Logicalis engaged with one of UK’s largest multinational clothing, home and footwear retailers to help them put their data in order. The key challenge the retailer faced was that their current data management strategy was out of date and couldn’t cope with the current demands from the business around their data requirements. This had reached to a point that a number of power users across the business had started to access data outside of the Business Intelligence team.
Another challenge for the retailer was GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliance. This new regulation coming into effect May 2018 will require all businesses that store and use Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to show how and where this information is stored as well as who has access and when. Failure to comply could lead to fines up to €20m or 4% of annual worldwide turnover, whichever is higher. At the time, the retailer hadn’t taken any actions to make sure that the business wouldn’t be exposed to legal and reputational risks.
Logicalis presented a consultancy approach that would aim to tackle these major issues for the retailer and bridge the gap, building a strong strategic relationship internally between IT and many key functions of the business mentioned above. We formulated a Data Governance and BIS architecture solution and at this point we are in phase 1 of the solution – the implementation of a Data Virtualisation tool in partnership with Cisco.
